Jigsaw Reading

Jigsaw reading is a literacy based strategy that targets students’ interest and reading abilities and is used in tandem with peer teaching. In addition, students are critically engaged and held responsible for completing their assigned readings. When students perform jigsaw reading, they are each assigned different readings with two or three other peers and are tasked with pulling out the important information of their article. These articles can be content driven pieces or primary sources which require upper levels of thinking. This literacy based strategy emphasizes student cooperation, their ability to determine importance in their reading, make connections from the text to their own lives, and formulate questions about their article.
