On the Other Hand

On the Other Hand (or O.T.O.H.) is a graphic organizer that allows students to compare and contrast different ideas, topics, events, or concepts in one place. This strategy can be used before or after reading to gauge previous knowledge of a concept or assess understanding afterwards. The O.T.O.H. consists of two columns with a series of picture boxes and lines underneath. In these lines and boxes, students are to draw information and evidence from textbooks and other course materials to compare and contrast the two ideas. A conclusion sentence will be written at the bottom of the organizer so that students make a thesis about the significance of these two topics in relation to one another.
