Preview Maps
Although this literacy based strategy is a graphic organizer, it is very effective as a note taking guide. Each Preview Map provides students with opportunities to summarize information, visualize their learning, and carefully organize their thoughts logically for future study. In addition, these maps provide instructors opportunities for differentiation. Students could be assigned various readings, diverse in difficulty and topic, be handed Preview Maps with specific questions and guidelines, or be assigned completely blank Preview Maps. The latter will challenge students to develop their own organizational techniques, determine importance of content, and use creativity to take notes.
