Shift Charts

The Shift Chart is a note taking guide, although originally tailored for English classrooms, could be altered to fit the needs of social studies classrooms by replacing characters with key historical figures or events. Students could take notes using this guide, cause and effect, sequence of historical events, characteristics of historical figures, or as a guide for primary sources. These charts are useful for taking history notes because they keep a large amount of information organized, offer opportunities for students to be artistic, make connections, and pull evidence from primary sources.
